There
are usually two different types of brakes in your car; disc brakes and
drum
brakes. Disc brakes work in a very similar way to the brakes on a
bicycle. On a bicycle there is a piece called a caliper which squeezes
the brake pads againt the wheel. In a car the disc brakes have a caliper
( guarded with brake pads) which grabs onto the disc of the wheels to
get them to stop. Drum brakes work on the same principles as disc
brakes. However, a drum brake presses againt the inside of the drum.
The force that is used to get the brake pads to work is transmitted
hydraulically, example through a fluid. When you step on your brake pedal
you are actually pushing against a plunger which forces brake fluid
through a series of tubes and hoses. This ultimately puts pressure on
the brake pads to stop your wheels.
The brake pads wear
down over time and need to be replaced quite regularly.
If you hear noises when your car is braking it`s time to take it to your
mechanic!
